Why mermaids? When I asked Susannah to do the artwork for the upper playfield plastics, she initially wanted to draw fairies. However, fairy wings did not fit well on the narrow plastics, so she decided on mermaids instead. Mermaids are magical, as are pinball machines, which is a great reason to have them there! They, of course, also represent Susannah's great love for both Chris and Katrina.
