Backglass Top Art

The backglass art is constructed in layers. On the top is the visible portion of the art, only some of which is illuminated from behind. The art is rendered on transparent film, and bonded to the back of the glass. A light translucent white coating hides the underlying shadow masks.

Since I did not want to change the position of the lights in the backglass, I had to design the artwork around the existing geometry. The major feature of the backglass is the progressive bonus lights that cut a diagonal across the middle of the glass, and can't be obscured by busy artwork. The structure of the lights dictated that the image would mostly be in the lower left corner, leaving the rest of the glass for the illuminated scoring features.

I love this picture of Chris and Katrina, which I think nicely captures their spirit of shared adventure. Even though the background looks like it might be Southwestern, the picture was taken on the Big Island of Hawaii. The image is posterized, giving it a less photographic quality, especially in the sky.

The colors and fonts of the lettering match those of the playfield, visually tying them together. The repeating hearts of the top and bottom borders echo the central heart rollovers of the playfield.
