Playfield

The playfield was in surprisingly good condition, although very dirty. Not that that made any difference for this project! After everything was removed from the playfield, I sanded the exposed wood down to the bare wood, and taped off all the light sockets.

The overlay was carefully aligned and applied to the playfield. Once it was affixed, three coats of Polycrylic were applied. After a week for the clear coat to set, all of the playfield inserts and cutouts were painstakingly cut by hand.

Playfield plastics were reverse-printed on transparent film. A sheet of 0.09 polycarbonate (Lexan) was cut to the correct shapes first, then the holes were drilled, and finally the film was glued to the back of the plastic using clear Craft-bond spray adhesive. A light coat of white paint was sprayed to opaque the background, and two coats of Krylon Crystal clear were applied to seal it. Finally, the edges were trimmed, and the plastics mounted on the playfield.

All metal parts were tumble-polished using walnut shell media. Plastic posts were tumbled with detergent to clean them. Finally, all parts were reassembled and mounted back on the playfield.
